Scott Armstrong

Scott E. Armstrong, designer and master craftsman, has had an intimate relationship with wood for more than thirty years. "Working with wood stimulates all my senses" he says.

His education at the Kansas City Art Institute and work, which included time at Kimball International as a Senior Product Designer, allowed Armstrong to return to Wyoming to raise his family and run his own shop. His designs encompass his feelings about the wood itself. "Wood is an almost perfect medium. It's strong, light, and flexible. You can shape it, carve it, join it, and color it with low tech equipment. It is also warm and very beautiful," he tells us, and it is easy to understand Armstrong's relationship with wood when you admire what he does with it. Some of his pieces sport deliciously curvy legs that make you wonder if the piece might just have a life of its own.  Others share the same innate grace in a more static form.  The variations are both endless and fascinating.
Regarding the design process Armstrong says, "Design of a piece is blending form, function, and aesthetics. Form is most important, and wood species and grain patterns are chosen to enhance it. Then comes function, and lastly ornamentation. The three must blend seamlessly."
